Well, okay, maybe all this is inspirational--David's gorgeous music, David's regeneration. In the end, David breaks free of his dead father's curse. David gets laid. David even gets married (to an astrologer played by Lynn Redgrave, no less). But at the same time we're being inspired, David turns inevitably into Gump-as-artist--a tame, romanticized puppy dog detached from his art and from human drama.
