The Men of Mouse

Blasting off with Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars.

The spareness of this setup might seem out of date in the age of Prodigy, but it's ideal for St. Werner, a cerebral sort who takes great pleasure in delineating his various philosophies. "I think 'pop music' and 'rock music' are old-fashioned," he claims mischievously. "Now it's time for new genres--time to play around with the nomenclature and see what else is out there. The phrase 'entertainment music' is more appropriate. It's about you, the audience, and us, the entertainers. We are here for you, and you are here for us. Or 'serious music.' It's possible to be entertained and serious at the same moment in time. And it's possible to be seriously entertained and to entertain seriously. Which is why we are here--and why you want to hear us."

Mouse on Mars, with Stereolab and Plush. 8 p.m., November 17, Bluebird Theater, 3317 East Colfax Avenue, $12, 322-2308 or 830-
