16 Horsepower

16 Horsepower, with the 32/20 Jug Band, Tuesday, November 30, at the Gothic Theatre, makes its first live appearance in Denver in several months; among other things, frontman David Eugene Edwards and bandmates Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert have spent a hearty chunk of time recently recording a new album in the mountains with producer Bob Ferbrache. No doubt the local audience will give them a warm reception -- the band's dark interpretations of folk and country's cold, cold heart have reached near-mythic proportions in this region and abroad. 16 Horsepower's lyrical imagery is at once stark and striking, with glimpses of redemption as crystalline as those of impending doom. An intense, assaultive experience both on record and on-stage, 16 Horsepower is an undisputed jewel in the local crown. -- Laura Bond
