Critic's Choice

This week's concert pick.

The light will break through the Fox Theatre on Thursday, December 16, when the Jazz Quartet plays its inventive and inspired string jazz. Dubbed "dawg" music by the late Jerry Garcia, the Jazz Quartet explores a potpourri of stylistic influences including swing, jazz, bluegrass, Latin and traditional folk; the current tour is in support of its latest release, I'm Beginning to See the Light. The group's all-star cast includes mandolin virtuoso David Grisman, guitarist Martin Taylor, who was voted Best Guitarist seven times at the British Jazz Awards, as well as David Grisman Quartet alum Jim Kerwin on bass and George Marsh on drums. In concert and on recording, the quartet brings new treatment and passion to several jazz standards. Besides acoustic interpretations of "Willow Weep for Me," "East of the Sun" and "Lover Man," the players will also perform spontaneous interpretations of original material. In all, the foursome's tunesmanship and musical pedigree are bound to animate the average listener and intrigue fellow musicians. -- Mike Engstrom
