Critic's Choice

This week's concert pick.

As much as any band, The Wailers, Thursday, January 20, at the Fox Theatre, must truly be enjoying Y2K and the renewed prominence it's brought them. The BBC chose Bob Marley and the Wailers' "One Love" as the theme song for its millennium broadcast; Time declared Exodus the best album ever; "No Woman No Cry" made number 97 on VH1's recently released list of the hundred greatest rock songs; London's Evening Standard placed a slew of Wailers classics among its top 500...heck, even the West Indies' national cricket team chose a Wailers tune ("One Love" again) as its official song. That no one bothered to even christen a "best reggae band of the century" is telling of how futile such an exercise would be. In short, the Wailers must be basking in duly earned recognition as the best ever. Though they no longer count Marley among their members, several originals will be present at the Fox, including Aston "Familyman" Barrett and backup vocalist Marcia Griffiths. Fresh off a well-hyped Marley tribute concert in Jamaica last month, the group should be true to form. -- Joshua Green
