Later this year, DeVotchKa plans to take up temporary residence on the East Coast and hopes to wind up in some of the more influential clubs of New York City. They'll also play the occasional wedding here or there. ("We'll play lots of polka," Urata states, proudly.) In the meantime, DeVotchKa's local dance card is filling quickly, as the band is finding itself paired with acts from divergent ends of the local spectrum, gigging with everyone from pop stars Dressy Bessy to the refined acid jazzsters in United Dope Front.

Urata and his mates should probably get used to people saying nice things about them. Perhaps sensing the comic potential of such an exercise, or simply hoping to find a catch phrase for some promotional material, employees at the Fox Theatre recently queried members of the establishment's extensive e-mailing list as to how a person might describe DeVotchKa. Response attempts invariably included lots of hyphens ("Hillbilly-mariachi-polka," for example), but simplicity seemed to sum it up best: "DeVotchKa," another response reads. "Da Shit."
