Check, Please!

Give our food critic something to chew on.

Q: I want to take my boyfriend someplace fancy for a romantic dinner, but he hates places that make him feel like he doesn’t know which fork to use. Do you know a place that feels intimate but won’t scare him (or bankrupt me)?

More About

A: Mattie’s House of Mirrors (1942 Market Street; 303-297-9600) might reflect just what you’re looking for. Although the setting allows for intimacy, something about the decor — could be the fact that the space was once a brothel — is rather masculine, and that tends to put guys at ease. I’d call it a fancy restaurant, but the prices aren’t outrageous; and while the service matches the classy space, it isn’t overbearing or condescending. The food, a combination of classics and contemporary, is superb, with plenty of man-friendly steaks and hearty pastas.
