Apoptygma Berzerk

Apoptygma Berzerk, Tuesday, September 19, at the Gothic Theatre, with VNV Nation and Noxious Emotion, is proof that Norway has a sinister side that’s barely hinted at in all that Viking lore. Bearing a moniker that translates to dead man moving,: the abrasive, beat-heavy industrial band springs from the prolific imagination of Grothesk (aka Stephan Groth), whose pursuit of the darker realms of synthesized music has elevated him to the status of fellow European artists like Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. Grothesk’s most recent full-length discs, 1998’s 7 and Welcome to Earth, released earlier this year on the Metropolis label, have only strengthened his profile among stateside fans of intense atmospheric and gothic sounds. Sometimes politically charged and always hard driving, Apoptygma Berzerk’s music is as suited for the mosh pit as it is for the dance floor. Dig that crazy sound.
