Eric Shiveley and the Shive-Tones, Saturday, January 13, at Herman's Hideaway, with Rocket Ajax and Carolyn's Mother, are riding a crest that mirrors the title of their debut CD, released last year. Everything Is Good has managed to entice both local audiences and critics, a semi-rare feat for a relatively new artist. Perhaps the disc's appeal lies in its evocation of universal themes. Over a melodic, often slow, at times jangle-driven backdrop, Shiveley muses on relationships, family, isolation and hope. His approach recalls that of Michael Stipe and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy -- artists who differ in style but share a clear emotional preoccupation. Aided by the capable 'Tones -- who sometimes include drummer Kenny James -- Shiveley is currently working on a second release, Desert Airport Music. (Music from that disc will be part of Saturday's lineup.) Things are good, indeed.
