Katalyst

Though Aloke Dutta, the writer, spiritualist and master of classical Indian tabla percussion, claims the headlining space at the Gothic Theatre on Saturday, July 27, opener Katalyst provides a compelling incentive for early arrival. The Denver band, which began as Wicked Groove six years ago, is a testament to the power of three: The guitar/bass/drum combo is tight, textured and loaded with talent. The band's debut EP, Changes, reflects a range of influences -- from Primus's bass-popping boldness to Tool's dark precision -- without succumbing to them: The band's aggressive art metal is its own, with hints of punk's brattiness and prog-rock's penchant for erratic time signatures and stop-start melodies. It's creative, different and worth a listen. In this case, change is positive.
