Denver's hip-hop scene has been kicked around for years, barely getting a foot in the door before being tossed out on the street to try again. Hopefully the cycle will be broken with the December 29 debut of Purple Martini's Sunday-night residency by the Break Mechanics, the brainchild of Future Jazz Project's KC and Ani DiFranco drummer Darren Hahn (pictured). Mile High natives who refuse to let local music slip into predictable drudgery, the two came up with the idea for live hip-hop showcases that incorporate jazz and funk and feature the brightest MCs and musicians in surprising combinations. KC and Darren lay down the roots for each show, while their fluctuating cast improvises. These Mechanics are guaranteed to fix your musical melancholy.
