How and where to get in the game

Many people view retirement as sedentary time to kick back, relax and play dominoes and bingo. But don't tell the folks who sign up for the Aurora Senior Center Day Tripsthat: Every Tuesday and Thursday now through March 13, a busload of active people in their twilight years head for the mountains for a day of snow-shoeing, cross-country or downhill skiing. "We have people in the sixties, seventies and eighties who just want to get outside and get some fresh air and exercise," says Elizabeth Bangasser, recreation-programs assistant at the Center. "We always hope for really good snow."

This year's destinations include Keystone, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Winter Park. All trips leave from the Center, at 30 Del Mar Park in Aurora, at 7 a.m. and return at about 6 p.m. If you haven't hit the slopes in a while and are worried that your skills are a little rusty, lessons and instruction are available. "All levels are welcome," says Bangasser. "We're always looking for new people."

The cost per trip for Center members is $20 for Aurora residents, $26 for non-residents; non-members can participate for $30 per trip. Lift tickets, if applicable, are not included in the price. Advance registration is required and can be made by calling 303-739-7950. "It's almost like a family outing," promises Bangasser. "Sit back, enjoy the scenery, and leave the driving to us. Everyone always has a really good time."
