Famous for his role in establishing the United Farm Workers union, Chavez will be commemorated Monday, March 31, on what would have been his 76th birthday. The 4 p.m. ceremony, led by Bishop Jose Gomez at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1209 West 36th Avenue, will be followed by a march to the Rocky Mountain SER office at at 3555 Pecos Street. "Cesar Chavez was a man who believed in social justice for this group of people who put food on America's tables," says Ramon Del Castillo, chairman of the Cesar Chavez Celebration committee. "He practiced non-violence, and following in his tradition, we're going to peacefully march through north Denver."

Starting at 6 p.m. at SER, Chavez's spirit will be invoked by local poets, musicians, artists and activists; dinner will also be served. Del Castillo says his group's vision is "to make this as big as Martin Luther King Day." Both events are free; for more information, call 303-964-5271.
