Sure, you could just go see the Roots at Red Rocks and call it a night. But if you caught last year's Smokin' Grooves Tour, you got a taste of what happens when ?uestlove, aka Ahmir Thompson, steps out from behind the drum kit and mans the wheels of steel. As he nimbly handled the decks between sets, ?uestlove proved his ear was just as hot live as it was in the studio, crafting his 2002 debut long player Babies Making Babies. It can't be easy to cram turntablist gigs into a schedule that's already overflowing. In addition to drumming for the Roots, ?uestlove is part of the one-off studio collaboration the Philadelphia Experiment; he has written for or produced numerous artists, such as Erykah Badu, Nikka Costa and Common; he's a freelance hip-hop writer for such publications as RapPages magazine; and he's informally advising Jay-Z on a new album. So if he can find the energy for an off-the-hook after-gig -- produced by Mile House (303-380-2772) this Saturday, August 30, in Boulder -- so can you. Also slated to appear are Red Scorpion, Bobby Breakfast Scramble and DJ Creamy Thighs. Go ahead, spend the night.
