Golden Film Festival

This weekend's second annual Golden Film Festival will feature a broad array of Academy Award-nominated short and feature-length documentaries, live-action shorts and animated shorts, as well as a selection of Colorado-made films. Sponsored by the Golden Resource for Education Arts and Theater (GREAT), the festival will be held in the ballrooms of the Colorado School of Mines Student Center, 16th and Maple streets.

Among the offerings: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Brian's documentary about the remarkable April 2002 fall and rise (just 48 hours later) of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez (right); 18 Days 16 Hours, Coloradan Bruce Borowsky's 24-minute documentary about a novice sailor's adventure racing across the Atlantic in a 72-foot boat; The Weather Underground, Sam Green and Bill Siegal's vivid look back at the radical splinter group that in 1969 broke away from Students for a Democratic Society and undertook an agenda of bombings and terrorism that landed the leaders on the FBI's Most Wanted List; Das Leben Geht Weiter (Life Goes On), a German documentary that tells the "absurd yet compelling" story of the last, epic propaganda film the Nazis attempted to make as the Third Reich began to crumble in winter 1944.

Also: Grandpa's Still in the Tuff Shed!, Colorado filmmaker Robin Beeck's hour-long peek at Nederland eccentric Trygve Bauge, the man who froze the body of his grandfather, Bredo Morstol, in the hope that he might someday be defrosted, good as new; Cost of Freedom, Vanessa Schulz's multiple-award winner about the struggle for survival of an endangered wolf pack in the wilds of Idaho.

The festival is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21, with first-day films beginning at 4 p.m. and the second day starting at 11 a.m. For information and complete schedules, call 303-202-4492 or log on to www.goldengreat.org.
