If weird exotica and psychedelic records seem like fossils only Austin Powers would find groovy, the seductive sounds of the Karminsky Experience could be reason for re-evaluation. James Munn and Martin Dingle, who share an affinity for obscure film scores, formed a successful DJ partnership in 1991; that led to a series of influential club residencies in the trend-setting metropolis of London. Following critical success in Europe as mixmasters, the British duo released several compilations whose quirky party vibe quickly attracted attention and prestigious invitations to spin for high-profile celebrity events and clients such as Diesel and Levi's. Unwilling to rest on their accomplishments as top-notch DJs, the two soon launched their own record label and released a string of successful twelve-inch singles. Their innovative sound secured Munn and Dingle a contract with Thievery Corporation's label, Eighteenth Street Lounge Music, which released the eclectic debut album The Power of Suggestion. That recording is now rapidly drawing transatlantic praise for its hedonistic blend of sitar-funk, Near-Eastern percussion and bass-heavy punches that never fail to ignite dance-floor mayhem. The Karminsky Experience is scheduled to play a limited set of U.S. dates -- including a stop at Rox Infusion Lounge on Wednesday, April 28, with DJs Ivy and Psychonaut -- supporting the release of the disc. Are you interested in a sonic shag, baby?
