Drink of the Week

Like Elisha

Sometimes, change is good. At Barry's On Broadway, which just took over the former home of the Skylark Lounge, neighborhood regulars are already rubbing elbows with hipsters -- and everyone's drinking a Like Elisha ($4.75). Named for the Blake Street Tavern bartender who created the concoction, this smooth shot mixes Goldschläger, Chambord, Malibu Rum, Midori and pineapple juice for a taste like a fruity Jelly Belly. Barry's is quite a successful mix itself: The Skylark's original bar remains, but crystal chandeliers give the place a more upscale glow. Proprietor Barry Zadikoff, a Denver native who's owned Tugs Bar in Northglenn for 23 years, decorated the dark walls with historic Denver photos, including a 1940s picture of Broadway complete with two-way traffic, a trolley car and the original Skylark. "I'm the kind of person who thinks that you have to respect the past to understand the future," says Zadikoff. "This is exactly the place that I was looking for for a long time -- a neighborhood bar where the people are the color." With $1 off all drinks during a 2 to 6 p.m. daily happy hour, Barry's won't have any trouble making friends.
