Scratching the Surface

Chris Fortier

Chris Fortier is one of the few truly old-school DJs on the circuit today. A pioneer of the Orlando sound, along with Icey and Kimball Collins, Fortier held a residency at the infamous Aahz club in Florida in the early '90s. His night was the first to host the likes of Sasha and Digweed on U.S. soil and established Aahz as a groundbreaking club. Superb mixing skills quickly brought Fortier well-deserved notoriety, and he began touring, often playing new markets in places like Boston, Charlotte and Washington, D.C. While his hectic road regimen has earned him a rep for being one of the hardest-working men in house music today, he still finds time to produce his own tracks with partner Neil Kolo on Fade Records, which he founded in 1995, and run the Balance Promote Group, a pool that promotes dance music to DJs. Big-time attention came his way last year when he released Bedrock: Compiled and Mixed by Chris Fortier on John Digweed's Bedrock label. It was an instant hit among fans and critics alike, yielding dates across the globe in cities such as Buenos Aires, Prague, Athens, Budapest, Zurich, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Catch Fortier this Saturday, July 31, at the Church for a night of some of the best house and progressive house the scene has to offer.
