Critic's Choice

A thirty-year veteran of the Front Range country scene, Dick Frost (second from left) isn't exactly a household name, but he's rubbed elbows with enough legendary figures to distinguish himself from the pack. Back in the mid-'70s, fronting a house band at the Four Seasons, Frost performed alongside Ernest Tubb, Ray Price and Waylon Jennings. Later with Dakota Territory, the gutsy guitar slinger and his longtime pedal-steel and dobro player, Gary "Sneaky Red" Morrison, shared the stage with Willie Nelson. After enlisting bassist Chris "Thumper" Cranston, the Dick Frost Band became a bona fide bar-room staple, gracing every landlocked honky-tonk and dive from Kansas to New Mexico. Over the years, Frost and company have issued a handful of releases, including It Sucks to Be Me, Diamonds and their newest disc, Back to the Basement (available through mail order at P.O. Box 6841, Broomfield, CO 80021). Still raising hell after three decades, the ornery and drum-free trio appears Sunday, August 8, at Greenfield's Pool and Sports Bar in Lakewood, offering timeless cover tunes in addition to the outfit's own material. Blending Western swing, outlaw country, folk and revved-up Southern choogle, Dick and the Dickaroos get the boots to scootin'. -- John La Briola
