DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid

Sunday, April 24, Fox Theatre, 303-443-3399.

As Renaissance men go, Paul Miller, better known as DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid (after a William S. Burroughs character) may not be much of a scientist, but he's definitely multi-talented enough for the polymath designation. Although musician, writer and theorist seem to be his favorite hats, sculptor, professor and video remixer appear to fit just as well. Projects like Rebirth of a Nation, Spooky's rerub of the D.W. Griffiths Ku Klux Klan-recruiting flick, utilized his musical and cinematic abilities. As a DJ/remixer/producer, he's populated his stream-of-consciousness sonic collages -- the kind he prefers over the traditional arcs of most DJ set programming -- with the likes of Yoko Ono, Wu-Tang's Killah Priest, Thurston Moore, Spearhead's Michael Franti, Nick Cave and Saul Williams. His latest full-length, Drums of Death -- a Def Jam and Rick Rubin homage of sorts -- features the skins of Slayer's own Dave Lombardo. Spooky shit, indeed.
