Tout de Suite

A kind of criminal fairy tale, Benoît Jacquot's Tout de Suite recalls both the Godard New Wave classic Breathless and its American counterpart, Bonnie and Clyde. A restless rich girl named Lili (dramatically beautiful Isild Le Besco) takes up with a small-time Moroccan thief (Ouassini Embarek) after a botched bank job, and their increasingly bizarre misadventures on the run take them to Spain, Morocco and Greece, where the story takes a decidedly Gallic existential turn. Cruel and more than a bit creepy, this intense study of unhappy youth is shot in sparkling black and white and is likely to remind viewers of the psychological thrillers that Jacquot directed in the 1990s -- The Disenchanted, A Single Girl and Seventh Heaven. Here, it is difficult to take your eyes off the alluring heroine.

Tout de Suite (translation: "right now") opens Friday, July 1, for a one-week engagement at the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli, 900 Auraria Parkway. For information, call 303-820-3456 or log on at www.denverfilm.org.
