This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Thursday, July 14Rather than feeling sorry for himself this summer, exiled Tour de France veteran Tyler Hamilton of Boulder is forging right ahead while appealing his two-year ban from the bicycling event, a sentence handed him for alleged blood doping. Instead, Hamilton's racing all over the world, working with kids and sharing his experiences with others in his Tyler Tunes chats. He's also raising money for competitive youth cycling programs as well as for the fight against multiple sclerosis through his Tyler Hamilton Foundation. The organization will benefit from today's local Live, Loud, Large broadcast of stage 14 of the Tour de France, beginning at 6 a.m. at the United Artists Denver Pavilions 15, 500 16th Street (admission is $20; visit www.bigscreenraces.com for details), and Hamilton himself will sit with fans during a TDF with THF broadcast and breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the United Artists Colorado Mills 16, 14500 West Colfax Avenue. Tix for the live Tour action with Tyler are $75.00; go to www.active.com to reserve yours.

Friday, July 15Long on enthusiasm, the Physically Handicapped Amateur Musical Actors League never ceases to amaze when members take the stage, proving to audiences year after year that wheelchairs can dance and disabilities are secondary to talent. This summer's PHAMALy production, the upbeat Broadway musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, opens today at 7:30 p.m. at the Space Theatre, 14th and Curtis streets. Shows, including audio-described and sign-interpreted performances, continue through July 31. For tickets, $25, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.phamaly.org.

Just when you thought the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy (which was forced to close early this year due to lack of funds) had been thrown for the last time, it's back in the saddle again, after a quiet reopening in April. With that in mind, the 2005 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will be especially sweet, beginning with tonight's Western-formal inductee reception at 6 p.m. and culminating with tomorrow's 10 a.m. induction ceremony in the Hall of Fame Garden. For reception tickets, $25, call 1-719-528-4734. The hall is at 101 Pro Rodeo Drive, Colorado Springs; call 1-719-528-4761 or visit www.prorodeo.org/hof for information.

Saturday, July 16For kids sick of being shunted off to the "children's area" at every outdoor festival under the sun, KidSpree rules: Billed as Colorado's largest outdoor festival for kids, this annual event at Bicentennial Park, Alameda Avenue and Potomac Street in Aurora, is all child-friendly, from one end to the other. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the fest will add a giant birthday cake constructed from (full) Entenmann's cake boxes, a KidSpree memory scrapbook workshop and a special self-portrait project for ten-year-olds to its already jam-packed roster of more than sixty free activities and entertainers. Other new additions include a hands-on cooperative ball sculpture, pom-pom "living room," splatter mural and more. Experience KidSpree today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; free shuttles will be available from the southwest parking lot of the Aurora Mall to the park. Call 303-739-7000 or go to www.auroragov.org/kidspree.

Sunday, July 17Dream on: For every parent who ever once lay under a tree, building castles in the air, the Casas for CASA fundraiser might be a way to make good on those childhood reveries. Benefiting the work of metro-area Court Appointed Special Advocates volunteers, four full-sized playhouses -- built and donated by local home builders and on view at Fillmore Plaza, First Avenue and Fillmore Street -- will be raffled off in the plaza July 28. The mini citadels will be then dropped off in the driveways of the lucky winners. Purchase tickets, $10 each or $20 for three, in advance at Cherry Creek North Gourmet Series and Films on Fillmore events. Call 303-695-1882 or visit www.adv4children.

Monday, July 18America's number-one geek? Many folks who were nursed through their awkward years by watching the short-lived television series Freak and Geeks would vote unequivocally and gratefully for the show's creator, Paul Feig, who developed a keen understanding of the kind of outsider angst during his own rite of passage that was depicted in the series. Feig revisits his past again in a new memoir, Superstud: Or How I Became a 24-Year-Old Virgin, which focuses on the funny side of sexual awakening. Hear him read tonight during a book signing at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. For details call 303-436-1070.

Tuesday, July 19What goes around, comes around: In a time when women are strutting around in patterned gypsy skirts and embroidered blouses, maybe it's time we all learned a few folk steps to go with the couture. Boulder's free Folk Dancing on the Plaza, a summer community tradition hosted by the Postoley Dance Ensemble, is certainly the place to do it: Just show up at the Boulder Municipal Plaza, off 13th street between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue, at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through July 26, and you'll be dancing your way around the globe, courtesy of Postoley's worldly instructors, who'll put you through the paces. No partner or experience is required. For information, call 303-499-6363.
