Journey

The Journey you're thinking of no longer exists. ThatJourney -- which had Steve Perry singing alongside four guys whose names you probably never knew -- is long gone. Of course, Journey existed before Perry, but its first three albums delivered zero hits, which is why manager Herbie Herbert hired the singer in 1977 and virtually forced him on the rest of the group. Initially they didn't want him, but it worked: From 1978 to 1986, Journey released six Top 10 singles and seven platinum albums -- and produced a pile of songs that you doubtless know far better than you'd ever admit. Although the act was never cool by anyone's standards, it was certainly huge. But that Journey ended in 1998 when the band acrimoniously parted ways with Perry, who, hampered by a bum hip, balked at touring. He was replaced by former Tall Stories vocalist Steve Augeri, whose previous group toiled in obscurity, cursed by the fact that he sounded too much like Perry. While Augeri no longer has that problem, ultimately this Journey is a replica -- even if it looks and sounds like the real thing. -- Dan Reines
