Charlie Brown's

Everyone has a favorite venue, but Kathy Napolinow has one more reason to love Charlie Brown's(980 Grant Street), the classic Capitol Hill watering hole in the Colburn Hotel. She was sitting on the expansive patio a few weeks ago, having drinks and dinner, when the bar's manager noticed a man walking out with a purse -- Napoli's, it turned out. A patron chased the thief two blocks, caught the culprit, retrieved the purse and gave it to the manager, who returned it to Napoli. "Charlie Brown's should be recognized as a bar that goes above and beyond the call of duty to protect customers and make them feel safe and appreciated," she says. "It has heart, character, and is the best bar in Denver!"

We'll drink to that -- especially any evening from Tuesday through Saturday, when Paul Lopezis playing the piano.

Even in this karaoke-crazy town, music fans are always looking for new places to sound off. Bowing to customer demand, Dixons (1610 16th Street) recently decided to join the club by instituting a karaoke night on Wednesdays, after the dinner rush has ended. But the August 17 debut may have been the first and last karaoke night at Dixons. A crowd of forty fans had gathered around 10 p.m. for the start of the singing -- which was quickly cut off after residents in the lofts overhead complained that the music was too loud. Now Dixons has gone back to the drawing board to see if there's a way to accommodate both downtown dwellers and divas. Feelings, whoa, whoa, whoa, feelings...

Reggae isn't just on the rocks this month. The African-themed Kilimanjaro (2648 South Parker Road, Aurora) is now offering no-cover live reggae every Friday. The acts are all local, with Lion Souljah first up on August 26. Although Manny's Smokehouse (2233 Larimer Street) specializes in blues and barbecue, it's featuring an alternative once a week with Reggae Tuesdays, which debuted this past week. Vinyl (1082 Broadway) has Reggae on the Rooftop every Thursday, when a DJ spins reggae mixed with R&B and hip-hop. And even Kazmo's Lounge (1381 Kalamath Street) is getting in on the act, with local DJs now spinning roots reggae every Saturday night.
