All Balled Up

The shootout between CU and CSU erupts again this Saturday.

Are you ready for some football?

In-state rivals the University of Coloradoand Colorado State University will meet up at CU-Boulder's Folsom Field on Saturday, September 3, to renew their traditional season-opener rivalry. The emotionally charged affair promises to be full of smash-mouth, trash-talkin' action -- and that's just from the frat boys getting their pre-game buzz on. Wait till you see what happens on the gridiron.

The match is always memorable, whether it involves a white-knuckle, Hail Mary tie-breaker in the last second of the fourth quarter or a humiliating defeat. Remember the year the CSU Rams routed the Buffs in Denver at the old Mile High Stadium, when the cops felt the need to use tear gas to break up the post-game skirmishes? Things are usually much more congenial than that, but it just goes to show how seriously some people take the competition.

This year's game could be a real shootout: The struggle will pit CU quarterback Joel Klatt against CSU field general Justin Holland, both of whom are candidates for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented each year to the nation's top senior collegiate quarterback. Buffs loyalists look to Klatt, now a senior, to break several CU passing records this season, while Holland is the state's all-time leading prep passer. Both went to high school in the Denver area -- Klatt to Pomona and Holland to Bear Creek. Spectators are cordially invited to tailgate or picnic on the Folsom grounds before the game. Just don't try taking any of that good stuff (alcohol, dope, dogs, oranges) past the gate. Remember, too, that this is a dry stadium: CU put the kibosh on beer for game days. And while that's bad news for some, the good news is that you're far less likely to get a cup of warm Bud dumped on your head.
