U-ROC. Every bartender should have a signature drink -- and I'm not talking about a "great" Cosmo. How about a little originality? And while we're at it, how about a cocktail that isn't so sweet it induces diabetes? I'm going to give the bartender at McLoughlin's a tiny break, though, because the bar -- a sibling to the Irish Snug -- just opened in the Riverfront development at the end of August, so maybe he hasn't had time to come up with a signature cocktail. But it sure won't be the Jolly Rancher ($5.75) he served me, made with Skyy vodka, DeKuyper Peachtree Schnapps, DeKuyper Pucker Sour Apple Schnapps and cranberry juice. One sip was enough to launch my friend down memory lane: "Summer. Senior year. The back seat of my boyfriend Paul's sapphire-blue IROC-Z28 Camaro. Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill." The jailbait waiter eavesdropping on our conversation clearly had no idea what we were talking about. The IROC-Z28 -- all power, fury and slimeball class -- began production in 1985, about the time our endearing waiter was in production, since he turned 21 just last month. Until McLoughlin's bartender comes up with something better, I'd recommend sticking with Guinness -- the perfect thing to wash down the wings, chicken tenders, burgers and fries that fuel mid-'80s engines here until midnight seven days a week.
