Only a few weeks ago, I besmirched champagne cocktails, questioning a man's sexuality because he'd ordered a "girl drink." Now, however, I must drink my words, because not only is Corridor 44 the swankiest, most posh and glamorous spot to hit Denver in the past year, but it's come up with a champagne cocktail that will not make a man feel, sound or drink like a girl. Black Velvet ($8), which is made with Guinness stout and champagne, takes everything good about Guinness -- malt, chocolate, caramel and creaminess -- and uses it to enhance the sweet and sparkly taste of champagne. My second-favorite drink is the Yellow Martini ($8), made with Stoli Citrus vodka, fresh lemon, sweet and sour, and sugar. A male friend said it tastes like "running through the park on a summer day with a chiffon skirt blowing up and the wind up my panties." I couldn't describe it better myself (although I do wonder what he's doing wearing chiffon). In fact, everything about the Corridor 44 experience feels like a fresh breeze blowing up Larimer Square's metaphoric skirt. Beautifully appointed with crystal chandeliers, white banquettes, leather couches and zebra carpets, the place looks so good it's impossible to remember the din and dank of Josephina's, its former self. Filled with beautiful food, beautiful drinks and beautiful people, Corridor 44 is Denver's new passageway to adventure.
