Science fiction films come and go, but Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, endures as an epic of the genre. From its mysterious black slab to its defiant computer, HAL 9000, the iconography of the piece has become part of our cinematic and cultural heritage; it continues to grip the public's imagination like no other sci-fi film before or since. "The scope of its imaginative vision of man," one critic wrote at the time of release, "immerses the eye, the ear and the intuitive responses of the viewer in a uniquely stimulating human experience." Still true, despite the flood of gimmick-driven, special-effects-laden imitations that followed. The complete, 139-minute version of the film, in a newly restored 35-millimeter print, will screen at 7 p.m. Monday, November 28, in the University of Colorado's renowned International Film Series. The showing will be in Muenzinger Auditorium, just west of Folsom Stadium on the Boulder campus. Admission is free. For information, call 303-492-1531. -- Bill Gallo
