Lawrence of Arabia

Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli

Unless your new plasma TV is the size of a conference table, it's a good idea to skip the DVD option and make straight for a movie theater to take in Lawrence of Arabia. The deepest pleasure of David Lean's 1962 classic -- all 227 minutes of it in the properly restored edition -- lies less in Peter O'Toole's portrait of the dashing, greatly anguished adventurer T.E. Lawrence (vivid though that is) than in the vastness of the desert and the majesty of epic moviemaking at its best. That deserves viewing on a Nebraska-scale screen. The film won seven Academy Awards, including one for best picture, but the most deserving Oscar probably went to cinematographer Freddie Francis, who brilliantly captured the drama of space and the sweep of sun and storm with Super Panavision 70 cameras.

Lawrence of Arabia will open Friday, December 23, for a one-week revival at Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli, 900 Auraria Parkway. This is a newly restored 35-millimeter print. For information call 303-820-3456.
