Stick your neck out at the Avenue Theater

Ever since Chicken Lips entrepreneurs Bob Wells and Dave Johnson took over the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue, the lights have often been turned up on the funny goings-on, even during odd times when your typical independent theater would be stone dark. Those times would include the Avenue's toddling Wednesday Night Series, a one-two open-stage punch that offers Virgin Sacrifice Stand-up Comedy on first Wednesdays and Oddville, a free-form, anything-goes performance night hosted by Rick Amick and Alf Kremer, on second Wednesdays.

Catch Virgin Sacrifice, hosted by local comic and radio personality Jared Ewy and featuring a blend of experienced and wet-behind-the-ears comics, tonight at 7:30 p.m.; audience members not only enjoy a load of laughs, but they also get to participate by voting for their favorite acts. "The first time for any comedian is always the best," Ewy says of the showcase. "People are empathetic and impressed." But the second time, he intimates, the jejune jokesters are fair game for tomato-tossers.

Admission to either event is $5 at the door; call 303-321-5925 or go to www.avenuetheater.com.
