New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is one of the busiest club nights of the year, with everybody and their mothers celebrating across the city. But the magic doesn't have to end when the clock strikes two -- as long as you can keep yourself entertained for five hours until the after-after-parties start.

Club Evolution (821 22nd Street) will be open at 7 a.m. on January 1 for its New Year's Recovery Party. DJs Jon, Achilles, Foos and others will be on hand all day, spinning the usual assortment of house, pop and other beat-iful pleasures; there's no cover, and the drinks should be strong. The party makes for a long weekend, but owner Andy Mannsfield doesn't mind. "It's rare that we get to do this for New Year's," he says. The early-morning gig may be a one-time thing for Evolution, but it's just business as usual for Kazmo's (1381 Kalamath Street). For nearly two years now, Sunday mornings at the bar have been bumping like it's Saturday night all over again. Starting religiously at 7 a.m., Sunrise Sunday attracts a gathering of regulars ranging from insomniacs to early birds, who appreciate an atmosphere that can vary from a chill-out lounge to a blaring techno club. The past few weeks have seen much more of the former, admits owner Victor Gomez. "More often than not, people come from their houses and not from raves," he says. But since New Year's Day happens to fall on a Sunday, he's expecting 2006 to start out with a bang. Resident DJ Dagan -- along with other favorite Kazmo's DJs -- will be around to give the one-two-house-techno punch. "The bar is not the prettiest," Gomez says, "but it's the vibiest. For a more low-key recovery, try a local watering hole. Carioca Cafe(2060 Champa Street) opens at 7 a.m. every day. Special features at the Bar Bar -- as the scene kids who frequent the Carioca call it -- include an air-hockey table, a jukebox with Kate Bush and a morning drink special called the Eye Opener. A couple of miles away, the Brown Barrel(76 South Broadway) opens at 8 a.m. on Sundays (and 7 a.m. every other day of the week). The bathrooms are small, the jukebox is stocked with classic rock and new country, and the early-morning bartender politely refuses tips. Here's looking at you, 2006.
