Peak Performance

Lewis and Clark are so yesterday. This is Zebulon Pike's year. In 1806, Pike led an expedition exploring the Southwest, an adventure that took him through what is now Colorado Springs to the base of the mountain that bears his name. (He never climbed it.) An exhibit commemorating that trip, Pike's World: Exploration and Empire in the Greater Southwest, opens at 10 a.m. today at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, the first of three major shows marking this bicentennial year.

Admission is free; the exhibit, which includes up-to-date maps of Pike's route and a video complete with narration from his journals, runs through October 14. The museum is located at 215 South Tejon Street in Colorado Springs; for more information, call 719-385-5990 or log onto www.cspm.org.
