Still Waters

It's time all you cultural slackers learned a thing or two about Clyfford Still. He's not as well-known as some of his flashier abstract-expressionist contemporaries, but the reclusive twentieth-century painter's legacy is poised to become a local treasure with the news that the City of Denver — which already cut a deal with Still's widow to acquire more than 2,000 works from the artist's estate — has chosen a site for the Clyfford Still Museum, which will open its doors just west of the Denver Art Museum in 2009. Surely that will give you enough time to get educated.

Here's help. Museum project director Gene Sobel will fill the public in on the basic Still facts with a lecture titled "Who Is Clyfford Still…and Why Does He Matter?" tonight at 6 p.m. at the Walnut Foundry, 3002 Walnut Street; then, on April 3, David Anfam, a London-based authority on abstract expressionism, will go into further depth, also at the Walnut starting at 6 p.m. Both events are free, but reservations are required; to RSVP, send an e-mail to info@cliffordstillmuseum.org. For more information, call 720-865-4317 or visit www.clyffordstillmuseum.org.
Fri., March 14, 6 p.m., 2008
