Get Up, Stand Up

Rising Up brings retro into the 21st century.

Get on the make tonight at Rising Up!, the town's monthly theme party where cats and chicks resurrect the '60s like Jesus on Easter Sunday. Tonight's installment, dubbed the Rolling Blackout Revue, takes variety to dizzying hipster heights with host Sir Ralston Purina and musical performances by Everything Absent or Distorted, Pee Pee, the Start-Ups and the Clap, plus comic nonsense from Ben Kronberg, Greg Baumhauer and Adam Cayton-Holland. If that's not enough to stuff your face full of fun, there's also the vintage-wax styling of DJs Mr. Fil, Tim Cook and Miles Van Cleef, who will spin super-solid mixes of Brit pop and soul. Trippy visuals will be provided by video jockey and Rising Up co-organizer Doug Bohm, better known as dBom.

"We go out to clubs a lot," says Bohm, "so we get bored with everything, and it makes us want to be more aggressive with our themes. So we started mining cultural things from the '60s and '70s. This particular one is a mock take on the Rolling Thunder Revue [Bob Dylan's 1975 concert tour]. We're poking fun at the excess at the end of the '60s, the self-indulgence of hippies and the drugs."

Get blitzed starting at 8 p.m. at 3 Kings Tavern, 60 South Broadway. Cover is $7, and it's 21 and over. Go to www.myspace.com/risingupdenver or call 303-777-7352 for more info.
