Unholy Rollers

Landmark’s Esquire Theatre

The raunchy cult favorite Unholy Rollers (1972) features gorgeous Playboy Playmate Claudia Jennings as the rebellious star of a Roller Derby team that's amply stocked with resentful teammates and bitter rivalries. The heroine's good looks and singleminded pursuit of fame make her a target at every game, and it isn't long until the spirited catfights and wholesale disrobings begin. This entertaining, low-budget ripoff of Raquel Welch's roller-derby vehicle, Kansas City Bomber, has a lot more yuks than its model. It also features Betty Anne Rees and Roberta Collins as fellow skaters. Directed by the forgotten Vernon Zimmerman (Fade to Black), the film was edited by a young New York movie buff named Martin Scorsese.

Unholy Rollers screens Saturday, April 8, in the popular Midnight Madness at the Esquire series. Landmark's Esquire Theatre is at 590 Downing Street. For information, call 303-352-1992.
