Jazz@Jack's

Riff and ready at the Pavilions

Who listens to smooth jazz? Sick people in medical-office waiting rooms and 7News anchorwoman Bertha Lynn, for starters. After Jazz@Jack's relocated from Platte Street to the Denver Pavilions (500 16th Street, #320, to be exact), Lynn cheerily employed her broadcasting skills as emcee/local-celeb-photo-op at the grand-opening party two weekends ago. Standouts in the crowd packing the much larger room were Miami Vice Moustache Guy and Ponytail Guy, clapping and cheering when Lynn proclaimed, "It's about time we had jazz downtown!" (And never mind that the former Jack's address was at the edge of downtown, or that El Chapultepechas been a jazz landmark at 1962 Market Street for fifty years now.)

Founding Jack's partners and house band Dotsero beamed Crest smiles through a lengthy set of contemporary adult rock, while uptown friends and music lovers gorged on free vodka drinks and stuffed mushrooms. "This is going to be a place you'll want to come back to," bandmembers urged. "We promise." With an already established clientele and now downtown denizens to convert, Jazz@Jack's might be just the thing to stabilize the seemingly cursed third floor of the Pavilions.

Coyote Ugly should probably take some notes.

Besides Dotsero, acts scheduled for Jack's over the next few weeks include Buckner Funken Jazz(April 20), 2nd Sound (April 26) and Wendy Woo (April 27). And on Monday nights, Mile Hi Comedy will offer a weekly showcase of established local acts and open-mike hangers-on. For more information, call the club at 303-433-1000, or go to www.jazzatjacks.com or www.milehicomedy.com.

As for the old Jazz@Jack's space, it will probably be absorbed by offices rather than remain a performance space. Neighborhood bars and restaurants -- Proto's, Paris on the Platte -- are already mourning the loss of the jazz crowds.
