Heads Up

The Denver Center Theatre is topping off its season with an all-out ode to the hat — or, more precisely, to a voluminous collection of those ornately bedecked scalp-schooners that are so integral to the African-American church-lady experience. Crowns, an adaptation by Regina Taylor from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, blends foot-stomping gospel music, a pretense of a plot about an unappreciative Brooklyn girl who discovers her heritage while relegated to the care of her Southern grandmother, and dozens of hats, glorious hats, to grab audiences by their very souls.

The final installment in the DCTC's four-play Women's Voices Series, Crowns officially begins in previews tomorrow night. But tonight it kicks off unofficially with a free-for-all performance at 6:30 p.m. in the Stage Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; free tickets are available at the box office today only, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The run then continues through June 18; for tickets, $18 to $45, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.denvercenter.org.
Wed., Nov. 15, 6:30 p.m.
