Something to Celebrate

Don't bring your politics to Fiesta Aurora.

Some pretty heavy shit's been going down in recent months throughout the metro area concerning illegal immigration and Colorado's Latino population — most notably, 75,000 people ditching class and not showing up for work on May 1 to rally as part of the Great American Boycott, and Cinco de Mayo festivities rife with resentment and political tension. Somewhere amid all the protesting and social action, the flag-waving and border battles, everyone forgot about having fun. We forgot that the Latino culture is part of what makes Colorado such a great place to live. We forgot how to celebrate.

Today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., wear white if you want to, but put aside your politics for an afternoon and head east to Fiesta Aurora, that city's second-annual celebration of Latino art and culture.

"This is purely a fun, family type of activity," says Julie Patterson, public-relations specialist for the City of Aurora's Cultural Services division. "It is recognizing such a thriving and vibrant community within the metro area."

Mariachi music, folklorico dance troupes, art and a whole slew of children's activities — including face painting, inflatable rides and fake tattoos — collide at the Telemundo-sponsored fest, along with authentic food and plenty of beer. Everything but the food and drink is free, and it all takes place at Fletcher Plaza, 9898 East Colfax Avenue. For information, call 303-739-7000 or visit www.auroragov.org/fiesta.
