Jazz It Up

As a boy growing up in Denver in the 1950s, Purnell Steen would head down to Five Points to hear jazz from such international icons as Ella Fitzgerald and Cootie Williams at the Lounge in the Rossonian Hotel. It was bluesy gospel jazz, the kind of "swing" style that anybody could snap their fingers and tap their feet to.

That scene may have fizzled in the '60s, but the Purnell Steen Trio plans on evoking it tonight at The Sounds of Five Points, a new Tuesday-evening installment at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, 930 Lincoln Street. The show is part of the Supper Club, which takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and includes a three-course dinner for $14.95, with all-you-can-drink wine for another $6. And if you miss Steen on the piano tonight — with Fred Fuller on acoustic bass and Mike Marlier on drums — next week he hopes to play with Charlie Burrell, the last living musician who played Five Points regularly. Call 303-839-5100 or visit www.dazzlejazz.com for information.
Tuesdays. Starts: Aug. 1. Continues through Aug. 29
