skylab2000

Aztlan Theatre

In the electronic scene, where "live" usually means "laptop," L.A.'s skylab2000 is truly an anomaly. The man behind the Skylab moniker -- Dennis Barton -- creates sounds live in the moment without relying on loops or pre-recorded instrumentation, allowing the vibe of the crowd to dictate where the music goes next. Synths, drum machines, live vocals, effects and myriad other instrumentation contributes to Barton's unique output. Skylab2000 (due at the Aztlan Theatre this Saturday, August 19), which got started at L.A.'s underground raves, has changed its style in step with the scene that birthed it, beginning with hard-core techno and moving on to more sophisticated electronic dance music.
