Gov't Mule

Beginning in 1994 as an Allman Brothers offshoot, hard-edged power trio Gov't Mule carved its name in rock history by putting on incendiary live shows and touring steadily between Allman obligations. Despite the death of original bassist Alan Woody in 2000, guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts soldiered on, eventually enlisting Andy Hess to handle low-end duties and Danny Louis to play keyboards. Touring in support of it new disc, High and Mighty, the group rolls into Morrison for what has become an annual end-of-summer jam. The band's latest output mirrors past Mule efforts, ranging from virtuosic slow burners such as "So Weak, So Strong" and the brooding, riff-driven "Like Flies" to the Clapton-inspired "Million Miles From Yesterday" and the hippie soul of "Child of the Earth." Being regulars at the Rocks, Haynes and company -- appearing alongside Nederland jamgrassers Yonder Mountain String Band -- should have no trouble pushing this Mule up the hill.
