Leaning Left

As a 23-year-old, Joe Thomas isn't terribly interested in the death tax or Social Security — and he doubts his peers lie awake at night worrying about such topics, either. That's why the Colorado Young Democrats are organizing an Ask the Experts educational forum that delves specifically into issues that resonate with young voters.

"We design this event in order to go after people who feel apathetic," says Thomas, media director for CYD. "Outside of the national conventions, I can't think of a time when politicians have gathered to educate the public, let alone young people."

The experts — Congressman Mark Udall, Colorado House Majority Leader Alice Madden, Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon and Senator Ron Tupa — will talk about gay rights, health care for young people, the College Opportunity Fund and national security. Then, a question-and-answer session will provide a rare opportunity for young people to discuss their concerns face-to-face with the politicians.

Ask the Experts is free and takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus, in room A2B70 in the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology Building. Seating starts at 6:30. Call 303-709-6887 for information; RSVP to cynthiadlowery@yahoo.com.
Thu., Oct. 12, 7-9 p.m.
