Spook Speak

It's time for Denver's arts institutions to take a bow in the glow of Daniel Libeskind's crazy new museum building. And three in particular — the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, Opera Colorado and Colorado Ballet — are taking a joint one today with Monsters in Art. The ultra-sophisticated nod to Halloween spirits features commentary on mythical imagery found in museum works, and in the costumes from recent and future productions — from the haunting Wilis of Giselle to the fairy-tale motifs of The Magic Flute.

"We'll have a nice exhibition of representations of monsters in the collection, from surrealistic pieces with an eerie quality to great images of actual witches," Kirkland spokeswoman Holly Victor says of the accompanying exhibit, curated by the museum's director, Hugh Grant.

Grant will lead the discussion while guests munch on hors d'oeuvre and enjoy "spooky" libations this evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Kirkland, 1311 Pearl Street. Reservations are requested, as is a $20 donation per person; call 303-832-8576 or go to www.kirklandmuseum.org for details.
