Well-known wine writer and entrepreneur Alexis Lichine once said: "When it comes to wine, I tell people to throw away the vintage charts and invest in a corkscrew. The best way to learn about wine is the drinking." And this week, our epicurean mayor encourages everyone to do just that: It's Denver Wine Week, designated three years ago to highlight the Denver International Wine Festival, brainchild of local Wine Country International publishers Christopher and Darcy Davies. The weekend kicks off tonight with Taste of Elegance, a wine-and-food-pairing event featuring Gold Medal wines and gourmet food prepared by Colorado chefs competing for a grand prize. Taste of Elegance runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the University of Denver, 2044 East Evans Avenue. The festival continues tomorrow with a winery tour and a Grand Vintner five-course dinner hosted by the Castello Banfi Collection, and Saturday’s Grand Tasting will feature more than 450 varieties of wine. In addition, the three-day fest will offer seminars such as "Small Batch Bourbons," led by a great-grandson of Jim Beam, and other culinary and wine-related exhibitions.
