Fear Factor

Be afraid. Be very afraid — but before you fire up the fear factory, take some time to think about what, exactly, should terrify you. Vox Feminista's Oak Chezar explains: "We're supposed to stay in fear. We've traded all our freedoms for security, we've gotten rid of the Constitution and torn up the Bill of Rights. We'll do anything to stay safe from the next threat — working a job you hate so you have insurance in case you get sick, staying in a shitty relationship for your whole life because you're scared to be alone."

What do American citizens trade for the concept of security? And do people on the margins of society possess a wisdom and perspective the majority lacks? The Fearless Freakshow certainly does: When it travels to Scare City (aka Anytown, USA), the freaks on the outside looking in are the only ones who can come up with a fresh vision of how to move from terror to fearlessness — or at least place fear where it truly belongs. "We should maybe be afraid of complacency and overconsumption and living in a society that has no compassion and being controlled by our government," hints Chezar.

Vox Feminista's latest offering examines all this and more, starting tonight at the Nomad Theatre, 1410 Quince Avenue in Boulder. The show continues tomorrow night and next weekend, then moves between various locations in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins through December 8.
