Forget Me Not

AfroBlu is a dance party to remember.

Ashara Ekundayo believes that people in Denver suffer not from a lack of culture, but a lack of memory. "Amnesia is so prevalent in Denver," says the co-host of AfroBlu, Denver's newest after-hours dance party. "If you're doing something good in this city, you have to keep it right in front of people or they'll just forget about it."

The multimedia dance celebration of life, art and African culture materialized in October after a staff member at Ekundayo's nonprofit, the Pan African Arts Society, came up with the idea. A few phone calls led to 350 people bumping and grinding their way to soul salvation at the hands of DJs spinning Afrobeat, deep house and nu-soul sounds. The decision to make it monthly was hardly a decision at all, and November's event swelled to 400-plus. Tonight's installment — featuring DJs Aztek, Musa, Segue, Joe Sherrell and Jeremy Sole — is sure to be something even a Denverite can remember. The party goes from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. at Orange Cat Studios, 2625 Larimer Street; call 303-260-9209 or visit www.myspace.com/afroblu for information.
Fri., Jan. 19, 11 p.m.-4 a.m.
