Stinking Stereotypes

In Hollywood, Jessica Simpson is to blond as Chicano is to: a) lawyer, b) accountant, or c) maid.

This is the kind of dominant stereotype that motivated playwright Luís Valdez to write I Don't Have to Show You No Stinking Badges, a satire/drama about Buddy Villa and his wife, Connie, who survive by playing bit roles in Hollywood films.

Staged at El Centro Su Teatro as an ongoing series, Badges begins when the Villas' son unexpectedly returns home from Harvard with dreams of becoming an actor. "His role is to challenge the Hollywood paradigm," says Mica Garcia de Benavidez, Su Teatro's organizational manager.

To find out if he succeeds, come by the theater at 4725 High Street tonight and every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 8:05 p.m. through March 24. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. For more information, call 303-296-0219 or check out www.suteatro.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8:05 p.m. Starts: Feb. 15. Continues through March 24
