Life of the Party

Via e-mail, redoubtable anti-critic Joe Bob Briggs, who's hosting today's Oscar Bash, describes this year's Best Picture nominees as "the most bizarre collection of losers since The English Patient." Granted, he sorta liked The Departed — but his thumb is down for Babel ("the movie that asks the question, 'How many flashbacks and crosscuts can we annoy you with?'"); Little Miss Sunshine ("a lame remake of National Lampoon's Vacation, without the wit"); The Queen ("the latest in Helen Mirren's attempt to play all the queens in the history of England"); and Letters From Iwo Jima ("If I'm gonna watch a movie in Japanese, it'd damn well better have some shoguns").

So what movies were more deserving of Oscar glory? Briggs lists Slither and Saw 3, which he acknowledges "was no Saw 2, but it was still great."

Fortunately for Briggs, he'll get a chance to share his aesthetic at the Bash, which begins at 1 p.m. at Capsule Event Center, 560 Santa Fe Drive, and runs through the Oscar ceremony. In addition to movie-tunes karaoke and assorted trivia and prediction contests, Briggs will screen cult faves Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Terror of Tiny Town and Barbarella. These movies bring together what he calls "the three B's: blood, breasts and beasts. And midgets, of course. Jane Fonda in the Lovemaking Tube? Are you kidding? How great is that?"

Admission to the Oscar Bash is $5 before 5 p.m., $15 after 5 p.m., and $19 for the whole shebang. For info, call 303-347-8252 or visit www.oscarbash.net.
Sun., Feb. 25, 1-10 p.m.
