Choreographed Commentary

Genocide and alienation are two topics that seem more depressing than inspirational. But Lemon Sponge Cake choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl carves beautiful ballets from such dark subjects. His latest work, Leopoldstadt 22, recalls his childhood in Austria and the aftereffects of World War II.

"It's a comment on the Holocaust," acknowledges Sher-Machherndl. "I'm not telling a story about it. Through movement, through the lighting, the costume, the music, I'm just making a little comment on the whole thing.
