Rock On!

When San Diego Padres reliever Doug Brocail plunked highly touted up-and-coming Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the wrist during spring training, the hearts of Colorado Rockies fans across the state collectively rose to our throats. Our boy! Our supposed phenom! Once it was revealed that Tulowitzki's wrist wasn't broken, though, that panic shifted to anger. What's your problem, Brocail? Three days later, the two sides faced each other again, and this time bitch-made Brocail plunked Matt Holliday on the left forearm! Brocail then exchanged words with the Rockies bench as well as with manager Clint Hurdle, who made his way to the field to check on his slugger. The next inning, Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis threw a ball behind a Padres player and was promptly ejected from the game. Stupid play? Perhaps. Francis got suspended and will miss one regular-season start. But there's no denying that errant throw sent a message: This year, our boys are not to be pushed around. With a core group of players who’ve been together in the bigs for three years now, there's talk of lofty possibilities at Coors Field this season. Dare we say "playoffs"? Come root the boys off to a proper start today at 2:05 p.m. when they face the Arizona Diamondbacks in their season home opener at 2001 Blake Street. Tickets are going fast; call 303-ROCKIES or visit www.coloradorockies.com for availability info. And if you miss your chance to see the game in person, it will air on the FSN Rocky Mountain channel.
